Viet Nam Required Reading List

Godes, David B., "Glass Egg Digital Media," Harvard Business School (6 March 2008).

The Glass Egg reading is a case study from Harvard Business School consistent with the case study approach often taught at the graduate school level. Please refer to the email sent to each student directly from Harvard Business Publishing to access the Glass Egg case from the Harvard Business Education site and/or refer to the URL above.

I have chosen the Glass Egg reading for several reasons, not the least of which is that we are scheduled to visit Glass Egg on Tuesday, 15 May, where we will be briefed by and we will talk with the individuals mentioned in the study to include: Phil Tran, CEO and/or Steve Reid, CFO, with whom I met in March. In fact, this will be our fourth visit to Glass Egg and it has, in the past, proved to be one of our more popular company visits.

The Glass Egg study was also chosen because it provides us with a case study model that we can apply to the other companies we visit, a model that we can use to understand and to analyze those companies, and a model that we can use to construct our pre-departure as well as post-trip powerpoint presentations and to write our post-departure company reports.

Retsinas, Nicholas P., and Michael Shih-Ta Chen, Chiaphua Group Vietnam, Harvard Business School (10 March 2008).

The Chiaphua Group reading is a second case study from the Harvard Business School consistent with the case study approach taught at the graduate school level. Again, please refer to the email sent to each student directly from Harvard Business Publishing to access the Chiaphua Group case from the Harvard Business Education site and/or refer to the URL above.

As with Glass Egg, I have chosen the Chiaphua Group reading for several reasons, not the least of which is that the Chiaphua Group is said to be a pseudonym for the Phu My Hung Corporation that we are scheduled to visit on Tuesday, 8 May 2012, located in the area known as South Saigon in District 7. This will also be our fourth visit to Phu My Hung where we will be briefed by members of their International Marketing Department who will also take us on a tour of their developments in the South Saigon area. The Phu My Hung visit is also one of our most popular company visits.

The case study model that describes and analyzes the organization and operation of both Glass Egg and Phu My Hung may be applied to understand and analyze our other company visits. It is also a model that we can use to construct both our pre- and post-departure presentations and to write our post-departure company reports.
